Capturing the Unspoken I recently completed my first solo show at the ARTshare 25 Gallery in San Mateo (July-August).
The title of the show was Capturing the Unspoken, and the piece at right, Talked Around, was featured.
Talked Around, which combines portrait and text, was inspired by a remark from a Holocaust survivor who referred to the collective denial of events with: "Anything can be talked around.” |

The text throughout the canvas, including his specific phrase, fades in and out-- some legible, some not, capturing a sense of confusion, suppression and meandering thoughts. With this partially legible text, there’s a sense of both the spoken and unspoken, hopefully leading the viewer to look more carefully, and perhaps attempt to fill in the blanks. In Talked Around, and many of my pieces, I am trying to capture the experience of unspoken inner dialogue and emotions. Each piece finds a way to visually speak and begin to capture the unspoken. The show was promoted online at The Mercury News and Artsopolis, and was also covered in the San Mateo County Times and the San Mateo Daily Journal. I don’t have any additional exhibits planned for the fall or winter, and plan to take at least a short hiatus, as I’m expecting a baby in February. Perhaps motherhood will provide new inspiration and subject matter for my artwork, but for now, my energy is focused on a different kind of creation. |
